Zachary Duvall

Intro

I've always been fascinated by patterns. Patterns can be found in music, which led me from elementary-school concert band, to high-school garage band, college marching band, and a bluegrass and jazz band. Patterns also got me into languages, including German, Chinese, Portuguese and others. I studied patterns in people and cultures during a master degree in social work, 8-year career as a therapist, volunteering in emergency mental health, and visiting/living in dozens of foreign countries for a total of over 3 years. I love communicating ideas and solving problems through the patterns of music, language, and human behavior!

It turns out, I've also always used patterns in some form of coding on the side... starting with the card game "21" on my graphing calculator in 11th grade. This gave way to blogs, dynamic spreadsheet expressions, business websites, and volunteering as 'Webmaster' in a non-profit organization for over 5 years. Ultimately, I decided to devote myself to developing skills and using patterns in coding. In March 2021, I completed a 6-month intensive full-stack coding bootcamp at App Academy. During the program, I realized my place as a leader among my peers. I consistently had classmates seeking my help with problem solving and debugging, was voted scrum master on a group project, and was given the nickname "Zacherberg".
